Ramblings Part 2

With Vegas and LA and Santa Fe behind us, now in Rado man, we are clearly in the autumn of our trip life.   Having a bit of an OCD personality, I have always liked order and rankings and Top Ten lists.  With no further ado, here is my top of mind, Top Ten list of cool things we saw or did:

10. Meteor Crater in AZ- Talk about American hucksterism...I want one to crash in our yard in Ft. Washington.  Now that would be a sweet way to make money, plus Bridget could run the Subway franchise we would open in the Museum/Visitor Center.

9. Swimming in the Pacific in Malibu- although the undertow was a little unsettling, at least we weren't pulled out to sea like Cat Stevens was, and last time I checked both of us are still Christian and have not had our Muslim conversion.  Weird how the whole way to Cali, the coast and Ocean continued to beckon us.

8. The Cody Wyoming Rodeo- the Rodeo capital of the World, crazy horses, tough men, pretty little ladies, and flag carrying horsemen and women advertising the local bank and Dodge Ram franchise every 10 minutes...what's not to like.

7. Celine Dion in Vegas-  Despite videos of her son who needs a haircut and her creepy husband (manager or gold digging cradle robber?), there is something slightly endearing about her, non?...and we know she can sing even Aretha into submission (VH1 Divas) which makes her Vegas gig the perfect way to spend a Friday night with drunk Bachelorettes.

6. Mt. Rushmore- Isbthere a spot up there for...ahem...a probable one term president like President Obama?  With or without a cigarette in his mouth?  It is really Clark Griswold kinda cool.

5. Colorado Springs - Broadmoor Hotel- While we didn't stay at the Broadmoor, we acted like we were guests, and it was definitely one of, if not the, the nicest hotel I have ever pretended I was staying at.  Plus, Bridget decided this was where she wanted to honeymoon...I have a nice CD earning .35% interest to get ready...🏧.

4. Santa Fe-The Cowgirl Restaurant- yes the art and uniqueness etc. in Santa Fe are what most talk about, but the beef brisket and cold beer here were monumental, and the chill factor, live music, had us both in that very good place that people clearly seek when they escape here.

3. Bighorn National Forest and Mountains-  This was definite"upside the head" evidence that we were not in Kansas anymore, and these mountains just kicked my arse with their sudden rise out of the plains.  Climbing them in the convertible was quite the experience and my knuckles are still a tad white.

2. Old Faithful and the Geysers and Jellystone Park- sounds like a Motown group, but despite being a tourist Mecca, seeing them on the 4th was a trip and there is not much else like America's oldest National Park anywhere else on earth, so they rate in my book.  Followed by a night under the Montana big sky in a Teepee and with vittles at the Bar N' Ranch, this was quite a memorable leg of the journey.

1. The Grand Canyon- Hiking along the South Rim and taking a train to get there, and surviving a train robbery was really, really cool. The views changed, the colors changed, and it made me really want to go back and see the original Planet of the Apes again with Charlton Heston.  It does make one wonder what the $@&? has been going on here on the the Blue Marble the last 4.5 billion years.  There is nothing to compare this to.

This list is by no means all inclusive, nor is it indicative of sidekick Bridgie's top picks.  It also does deserve a late honorable mention pick of Paramount Studios where Lucy and Desi once ruled, and we got coffee at the Glee "Lima Bean" and even went into Glee's  "Breadsticks" which is really the Paramount Commissary.  Also seeing Scott Baio there in the flesh, on to a new role finally in "Daddy's Home" on Nick this fall (set your DVRs) and moving on from Charles in Charge, makes me feel like us almost 50 sumpin kids, still have a lot to offer the world 😘. Right?

Wild, wacky, vast, bizarre, funny, rockin, endless, silly, beautiful, cool, and yes good ol mother bleepin "fantastic" all come to mind when thinking about the last two weeks.  Exceeded high expectations, and best of all, my sidekick Bridget Lawless Googas Gagas Day aka Bridgie the Kid, was what made all of this really a bucket list busting good time.  We saw it all.  Now we get to to go home and share it with the fam.  We miss them, they miss us, and all is right with the world.

If you see a chance take it.

Is it hot where you are? Well, its a balmy 106 degrees here in Mojave Desert near Death Valley. I don't always vacation in deserts but when I do, I perfer the Mojave. Looking foward to jumping in the cool Pacific.

Do You See That Pointy Tower?

That tower was our hotel in Las Vegas. It is called the Stratosphere. It is the highest tower west of the Mississippi River. We saw the different casinos: Paris, Eygpt, and New York. We saw Pete Rose at the Old Homestead restaurant in Caeser's Palace. But the best part if the night was seeing Celine Dion at the Collesseum. She was AMAZING. She of course sang "My Heart Will Go On" and other classics but she also did songs like "Rolling in the Deep". We would tell you more but.. WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS STAYS IN VEGAS.

MY Opinion of Our Trip so Far

Hi!
It's Bridget here with MY opinion of our trip so far. Mine won't be as lenghty as my dear Father's, just a little summary.
I think the best part of our trip is the different land. Each land has it's own unique people, food, religion and entertainment. From Powell, Wyoming to a teepee in Montana, to Salt Lake City, to Las Vegas. Half of our car could be in the plains while another half could be on a hill. I have broken up our trip in 3 parts: Natural, Urban, and back to Natural. Black Hills National Park was our first natural stop. To me, Salt Lake City was half natural, half urban. It was a midway stop. Las Vegas is the first stop on the urban area. The Grand Canyon is the first stop on our 2nd natural part.
I have enjoyed our trip very much so far.

Reflections and Ramblings...so far

So, you think you can tell, heaven from hell and blue skys from pain, we can too, and since you were no doubt wondering what happened to today's blog posting, here it is.

Word has it that some believe we are a bit too heavy on pics, and too light on the written word. I'll get to that in a sec, but we are now in Salt Lake City and just got back from seeing the Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearse, after a sumptuous dinner at The Olive Garden, so after all that excitement following our 300 mile trip through Idaho from West Yellowstone, we have been a bit busy.  But given that Bridget and I are six days into this Amazing Adventure, it does provide a natural and appropriate time to pause, comment, and reflect on all that we have seen, which has been beyond belief and expectation.

Of course it is impossible to put into words all of it, so pictures do provide a necessary vehicle to try to convey the highlights.  Bridget observed that we are now entering the cosmopolitan, citified segment of our journey, having come from the true wilderness of the American west and nights spent in a Teepee etc under the Big Sky.  One might not consider Salt Lake to be cosmopolitan, but it does have quite a bit going on as evidenced by the funky bars and restaurants near our downtown hotel and it is 180 degrees from where we have been the last 6 days.  It sort of of caps this first segment nicely to reflect on the first part of the trip from a homogeneous place like Salt Lake; with all of it's incredibly nice, smiling, mostly pale, Mormon's, and following a dinner at Olive Garden (a first for both Bridgie and me) which represents all of what many feel is the evil strip mallization of America, given that all we have seen thus, far has been for us as unique and diverse as America has been, still is, and will always be.

No, we didn't write the first American road trip story, many, many others have done this gig before.  Jack Kerouac and our old friend, John Steinbeck, whose Travels with Charley accompanied us on the convertible's speakers this morning and is as relevant, and dead on, about this country, it's inhabihants, roadways and soul today, as when Steinbeck took his trip in 1960, come to mind here.  However, the definitive road trip story hasn't really been written in stone by anyone, as it is ongoing, it is individual, and we all are writing it every day aren't we?  Bridgie the Kid's and my story, is our story, and your story, and that's the story.

Unfathomable beauty, which only photographs and memories do justice to, natural resources, vast spaces, a mosaic of people and interesting characters, and yes even the comforting sameness such as the ubiquitous Subway's awaiting us off of every exit ramp is what this road trip has been for us so far. It is the powerful cocktail of our inherent human need to be alike, and our tribal need to be together, shaken not stirred, with the American quest to be on the move that has also struck me.  We have ourselves quite a country folks, built on the natural largesse of wonders like Old Faithful, and the perseverance, artistic genius, and American can-do spirit of Mt. Rushmore, and yes, even the sameness of The Olive Garden,  Interstate 15 between Pocatello and Salt Lake, and inhabited by you, and me and those blond haired, blue eyed smiling Mormons.  The point to me, on this day after celebrating our Independence Day, is that it's all beautiful in it's own way, and the freedom to roam and be independent should not be taken foregranted.  I don't think the good ol' USA is done yet, thank you very much.  Looking at the everlasting smile on my 11 year old accomplice's face while contemplating the Two for $25 summer meal deal at OG confirms it.  We think we have lot to complain about, and all is not perfect for sure, but as I prepare to slumber here in this rather posh Courtyard Marriott, in this oddly unique and yet very vanilla city, I was thinking to myself here at the Hotel Utah that this could all be heaven or this could be hell, but I'm pretty damn sure they don't have convertible's in hell.

Sin City awaits.
